It’s an odd one, the popular story of Cranmer carrying his wife around in a box. You see it in every history series with him in, but off course, it’s not verifiable. Imagine being carried in a smelly box with no light and limited air? You would have bowed knees. The poor woman, oh I hope it really isn’t true! She was very brave to defy the laws in the first place and certainly deserved better than being carried around in a box, even a large one. Besides all he needed to say was that she was his housekeeper, sister or mistress, the latter being quite accepted. I have to admit, though, Cramner must have been quite ingenious hiding his second wife from a police state.
