Gareth Russell talks about Mary I

Here's this month's expert talk by Gareth Russell (who kindly stepped in because Robin Maxwell was unable to complete her talk in time for February - she'll be on next month). Gareth is speaking about Mary I and his wide historical knowledge really does come through.

Loved the video about Mary 1st . She is one of my favourite Tudor Queens. From being a little girl I was always fascinated by Mary. I’m really looking forward to the chat with many questions. I only hope I’m not working night shift on the night of the chat

It was great to get a balanced portrait of Mary 1. I must confess the images of the aging and deranged Mary opposite Cate Blancett was the one that stuck with me. I also never pondered that the point you made about the reformers’ view being destiny for England.

Both of these women (Mary and Elizabeth) had so much hardship by our standards…unfathomable to be on the bastar seesaw. No mater what team you are on, one cannot help but stand in awe of them both.

Can you speak to how Philip felt about her outside political circles? Was he as detacted and disinterested in her as has been my understanding?

    Thanks so much.

Hi , I too would like to know more about Philip . I don’t know much about him but I was told that he was only 5ft tall and had a large chin due to family inbreeding . I also read that when they ate in public Mary ate from a gold platter and Philip from silver. I would love to know more about Mary and Philips relationship , thanks
